Nine has reportedly reached a deal with Facebook over payments for its news content on the social media platform, following the introduction of the news media bargaining code last month.

The media company signed a letter of intent with Facebook for the use of its news articles, according to reports in The Sydney Morning Herald, which is owned by Nine.

Nine has not confirmed the deal, which comes after News Corp announced it had landed on a three-year deal with Facebook in Australia.

“We continue having constructive and fruitful discussions with the Facebook,” a Nine spokesperson says.

“When we have anything to announce we will do so to the ASX, as is appropriate.”

Facebook has also reached deals with Seven West Media and three independent news publishers; Private Media, Schwartz Media and Solstice Media.

Meanwhile, Google has reportedly landed on deals with News Corp Australia, Nine, Seven West Media, Junkee and seven smaller publishers including Australian Community Media, Schwartz Media, Solstice Media, The Conversation, and Private Media.

Both tech giants have been working on securing payment deals with news media outlets to avoid being subject to the news media bargiang code which passed last month.

Under changes to the new law, the government’s decision to designate a digital platform under the code will take into consideration whether they have made a “significant contribution” to the sustainability of the Australian news industry through commercial agreements with news media businesses.
