OMD has hired a head of strategy for McDonald's, with Mindshare's Gideon Hornung shifting from GroupM to Omnicom to take on the role.

Hornung had been looking after NAB, MLC, General Mills and Origin Energy as his key clients at Mindshare, but the new role will have him focus solely on McDonald's.

AdNews understands this is the first time there has been a head of strategy devoted solely to McDonald's.

He has also worked client-side at Coles.

OMD is pitching the appointment as a further strengthening of its strategic offering, pointing to the hires of Mat Rawnsley from The Monkeys and Dan Bye from The Monkeys as evidence of its increasing focus on strategy.

Hornung will work under OMD's national head of strategy, Gavin Gibson, and report in immediately.

OMD hold the media account for McDonald's, but lost out on a pitch for the brand's social media and digital account to VML.
