Nine has appointed former Sky News national editor Greg Byrnes as its head of content for the Macquarie Media business.

According to recently named radio boss, Tom Malone, Byrnes will now handle all the on-air content for the radio business, of which Nine fully acquired earlier this year.

"Greg has a long and impressive career in media, and in particular radio, starting at 2XL Cooma in 1990.  He joined 2UE in 1993 and spent 17 years there most noticeably as News Director and Program Director," Malone says in a note to staff.

"For the past 10 years Greg has been at Sky News, as Channel Manager and National Editor, and more recently the Executive Producer of their talk shows."

In the new role, Byrnes will report directly to Malone, starting with the business this week.

The Macquaire Media business has undergone several changes following the Nine takeover, with then CEO Adam Lang exiting the business as the role was made redundant.

Macquaire Sports Radio is also under review, with its talk content on hold due to poor ratings.
