Despite the vegan backlash, MLA’s Australia Day ad has come out on top as YouTube’s most watched ad for the Q1 2016.

Samsung also made the list for its emoji spot, followed by Lego which secured two slots, David Jones, Optus, Dominos and Barbie. See the full list below and watch the ads.

Google Australia head of YouTube and ads Chris Dodson says: “The ‘We Love Lamb’ Australia Day video featuring Lee Lin Chin and Sam Kekovich captured the attention of viewers and, at two minutes long, showed audiences have an attention span for interesting content.

“From lamb to Lego, the top ads this quarter all succeed in creating content their audiences care about and delivering it in the moments that matter.”

In addition to the regular YouTube ads leaderboard, Google has provided the top five ads Australians chose to watch on mobile, as 50% of YouTube watch time now comes from mobile devices, says Google.

In top position again is MLA, this time followed by Pokemon’s Super Bowl commercial, Clash of Clans, Samsung and Coca-Cola’s Hulk vs. Ant-Man.

“Australians are seeking uniquely mobile experiences online on their smartphones,” says Dodson. “There are some similarities and some differences in the ads that feature. The Australia Day Lamb 2016 video takes out top place on both lists, but the others rounding out the top five are distinctly mobile."

“In these mobile moments, our expectations are high and our patience is low. This makes the quality, relevance, and usefulness of a brand’s message more important than ever.”
