DDB Sydney has appointed Fran Clayton as chief strategy officer.

The move sees Clayton return to DDB Sydney after departing in 2018 to join McCann Australia.

“It gives me great pleasure to welcome Fran back to DDB. She is a world-class thinker and we couldn’t be happier she is returning to lead our strategy offering," DDB Australia CEO Andrew Little says.

"With Priya, Tara and Fran leading the Sydney office, I have no doubt the agency will continue to be an unstoppable force.”

Clayton departed McCann last month alongside Sydney managing director Hazelle Klønhammer in the midst of a leadership team shake-up as Ben Lilley returned to the agency and assumed ownership.

Clayton first joined DDB in 2013 as planning partner and was promoted to head of planning in 2014. In 2016, the agency promoted her to chief strategy officer as Leif Stromnes took on a national role.

During her five years at DDB Sydney, Clayton spearheaded the strategy for McDonald’s and was the lead strategist on the Volkswagen Commercial vehicles pitch and subsequent ‘Naked Ute’ campaign for Amarok.

Prior to her time at DDB, Clayton previously worked for Saatchi & Saatchi and Publicis Mojo NZ.

“My five years at DDB Sydney were amazing for many reasons but most importantly, the culture and the people make it an outstanding place to work and create," Clayton says.

"I couldn’t be happier to return home to the agency and get another opportunity to another opportunity to work on big challenges for iconic brands."
