60-second interview: Archibald/Williams' Chris Yong

By AdNews | 2 September 2015

Archibald/Williams managing director, Chris Yong, spent 60 seconds with AdNews, talking about the industry, his philosophy and why he won't get invited to many digital parties.

My favourite restaurant for a business lunch is: Felix on Ash Street Laneway. Top little brasserie.

My favourite ad is: Honda ‘Cog’. Closely followed by Gilette’s ‘The Best a Man Can Get’ circa 1989. An advertising tour de force.

My must-have gadget is:  Right now it’s Logitech’s UE Boom – a great compact bluetooth speaker that sounds really expensive.

My favourite media is: It’s an unpopular answer that won’t get me invited to many digital parties, but I love outdoor. The good ol’ static variety. I love it for the fact it’s such a unforgiving medium that requires the simplest expression of an idea to work. And with the industry so focussed on new media channels and platforms, truly great outdoor is fast becoming a very rare thing.

My favourite TV show is: Family Guy. Arguably the best writers in the business.

The last book I read: The Audacity of Hope, by Barack Obama.

My mantra / philosophy is: There’s always a way.

I got into advertising because: I was the owner of a shiny new degree and hadn’t a clue what to do with it. My cousin was an Art Director at one of Sydney’s best shops at the time - Foster Nunn Loveder – and managed to sneak me in for a weeks work experience. I remember it vividly. Grown men dressed like teenagers, everyone having a laugh and incredible ideas plastered over every wall. I was hooked.

If I wasn't doing this for a living, I'd be: Let’s hope I’m never faced with that prospect because I’m not much good at anything else. Probably studying medicine.

In five years' time I'll be: At Archibald / Williams surrounded by the best people in the business.

Tell us a joke: A bear and a rabbit are taking a shit in the woods. The bear turns to the rabbit and says, "Do you have a problem with shit sticking to your fur?" The rabbit says “No?” So the bear wiped his ass with the rabbit.

Define your job in one word: Emotional.

What's your poison?: Beer. It’s always been there for me and it’s never let me down.

What animal are you most like?: A Chihuahua...small and deeply annoying, but smarter than you might think.
