Sky News is launching its first show created exclusively for social media, Unpacked, next week.

The daily program will air on Facebook Watch from 23 September at 5pm, covering major news of the day. It will be filmed in a custom-made studio at the Sky News studios in Sydney.

Tim Love, Sky News head of digital, says the program will target younger audiences.

“Rather than re-cap the news of the day, we’ll be providing viewers of Unpacked with all the details they didn’t read about or see on a particular story that is being widely discussed and talked about online,” Love says.

“Unpacked is an upbeat program, appealing to a younger social media focused audience who want to be informed and gain a better understanding of a news topic that has gained traction online.”

The show is part of deals Facebook made with publishers, such as News Corp, Nine and Seven, in August for exclusive content for its streaming platform.

The agreement came days after the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission handed its Digital Platforms Inquiry report to the government which looked at the impact Facebook ad Google have had on local journalism.

The government is due to give its final response to the report by the end of the year.
