The federal government has distributed $74.6 million across 185 Australian publishers through the Journalism Assistance Fund (JAF), with Nine Entertainment taking the largest share of the pool.

The news comes a day after Nine announced 30 redundancies across its publishing mastheads.

The fund was established in November 2025 in response to the News Media Relief Program, which distributed $12 million to publishers, increasing the grant pool to award publishers $39,000 for each eligible full-time-equivalent journalist they employ over the grant period, from 2025-26 to 2027-2028.

"Quality, relevant news is essential for keeping Australians informed and connected — that's why our government is investing $67 million into the Journalism Assistance Fund," said Anika Wells, minister for communications.

Nine, via Fairfax Media, received $8,163,870, while Nine Entertainment Co received a further $7,962,240, bringing Nine’s JAF payout to just over $16 million.

Seven Network was the third biggest recipient of the grant at $5,594,160, while West Australian Newspapers received $4,084,080.

Among independent publishers, the Conversation received just over $1 million, Private Media $737,000 and Capital Brief $686,000.

The Daily Aus took home $549,000, Solstice Media $529,000, Man of Many $369,000and Mamamia also receiving $268,000 in funding.

The full list of recipients is publicly available at grants.gov.au.
