News Corp Australia is launching a digital-only news publication, The Canberra Star.

The news site, set to launch next month, will have a dedicated team of journalist in Canberra and focuses on local news for the region.

"Following the recent success of our two new online news brands, The St George Shire Standard and The Illawarra Star, we will be launching a local news site for Canberra readers next month,” a News Corp Australia spokesperson says.

“It will focus on local news and local people, giving Canberra a trusted, true local news source dedicated to the local, important, everyday issues that matter the most to the local community."

Although The Canberra Star will be online only, it adds competition to the small Canberra market.

It comes just weeks after former Domain boss Antony Catalano purchased Australian Community Media and Printing business, which includes The Canberra Times, from Nine.

The launch also follows the launch of a gloss agricultural magazine, Agjournal, by News.

News Corp Australia says it sees opportunities for further digital-only local community publications.

“As a trusted community brand, NewsLocal is committed to connecting with local communities who are often seeking new ways to stay in touch with what's happening on their doorstep,” NewsLocal publisher John McGourty says.

“We will continue investing in local community journalism, local content and a new medium for local businesses to advertise their products and services.”

“The success of the recently launched digital St George Shire Standard and The Illawarra Star proves the model works for readers and advertisers”

“Our aim is to build a loyal base of readers and subscribers based on audience-led stories, feedback from stories, with content locals want to read, and delivered online, which is an increasingly popular choice for consuming news.”
