Movers & Shakers: VML, Cannes Lions, StackAdapt, ABC, Magnite

It's hard to keep up with all the latest moves across media, marketing and advertising, so we've made a list. Check out some of the biggest moves this week.

VML reveals its global creative leadership team

VML has announced its global creative leadership team to be led by Debbi Vandeven, former global VMLY&R chief creative officer.  Rafa Pitanguy, continuing as deputy global chief creative officer and global CCO for The Coca-Cola Company, has played a pivotal role since joining VML (then Y&R) in Brazil in 2016. Kaleeta McDade has been named global chief experience design officer (CXDO) and global CXDO, The Coca-Cola Company. Manuel Bordé will serve as global chief creative officer, commerce. Mel Routhier has been promoted to global chief creative officer, health. Bas Korsten has been named global chief creative officer, innovation, and co-chief creative officer, EMEA and Tom Tearle, VMLY&R ANZ's CEO, was last month appointed chief executive of VML ANZ. Gavin Bain, Wunderman Thompson CEO for Australia, becomes VML chief consulting officer ANZ and managing director, Perth.

Luke McIlveen is the new executive editor of SMH, Age, Brisbane Times, WAToday

Nine has appointed Luke McIlveen executive editor of The Sydney Morning Herald, The Age, Brisbane Times and WAToday. He replaces Tory Maguire, who was promoted to managing director - publishing. McIlveen started his journalism career as a cadet at The Australian, before heading to the press gallery in Canberra as a political reporter. He later held senior roles at The Daily Telegraph, edited The Manly Daily and was editor-in-chief at  news.com.au.

Australia's Rose Herceg appointed Cannes Lions jury president

Rose Herceg, the country president of WPP in Australia and New Zealand, has been appointed the Cannes Creative Data Lions president. She is one of  a raft of global experts confirmed to lead the 2024 juries at The Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity. Simon Vicars, CEO, Colenso BBDO, New Zealand, is the Audio & Radio Lions president.

Meta's Liam McCarten becomes StackAdapt's APAC VP of sales

Liam McCarten has been named VP of sales, APAC, for programmatic advertising platform StackAdapt with an initial focus on Australia, New Zealand, Southeast Asia and Japan. McCarten joins after working at Meta for the past nine years, holding sales leadership roles in New York, London and Singapore. Most recently, he held the role of director, global business group APAC, leading the health, beauty, luxury and technology verticals.

VML appoints Ellie Quinti client services director Perth

VML has appointed Ellie Quinti client services director in its Perth office. The announcement comes as WPP creative agencies Wunderman Thompson and VMLY&R unify to create VML. Quinti, a Perth local, combines more than 20 years of both marketing and agency experience across various industries and brands, bringing a unique perspective to the role.

Kim Williams replaces Ita Buttrose as ABC chair

Kim Williams, a former CEO of News Corp Australia and of Foxtel, will be the new chair of the ABC. He replaces Ita Buttrose who ends a five year term in March. Prime minister Anthony Albanese made the announcement. The appointment puts two former CEOs of News Corp Australia on the board of directors. Peter Tonagh, the current deputy chair of the ABC, worked for News Corp entities for nearly fourteen years. He was CEO of Foxtel, REA Group and News Corp Australia.

The Principals' Gareth Joe moves to Nature as brand strategist

Strategic insights consultancy Nature has appointed Gareth Joe as brand strategist. He was most recently as associate strategy director at independent branding agency Principals. In the newly created role, Joe will work with Aliya Hasan, Nature’s head of strategy.

Mat Baxter leaves Huge, returns to Australia

Mat Baxter is stepping down as CEO of IPG's creative consultancy Huge, a role he's had since 2021, and returning to Australia from New York. He is being replaced by Lisa De Bonis, the chief product officer. Prior to Huge, De Bonis served as managing director at Accenture Interactive, operating in multiple leadership roles across the UK and Europe. She drove double-digit growth across communications and technology clients, enabled the integration of key acquisitions and launched a new capability to scale experience-driven engagements.

GroupM's Nick Henderson joins Magnite in New Zealand

Magnite has appointed GroupM's Nick Henderson to the newly created role of lead, revenue solutions for New Zealand. Henderson, with managing director for ANZ, Yael Milbank, will work closely with premium publishers. He spent more than nine years with GroupM, most recently as solutions architect.  

Komo Technologies appoints Simon Rollenbeck head of marketing

Customer engagement platform Komo Technologies has hired Simon Rollenbeck to be head of marketing. Rollenbeck comes from Mozaik Play, where he was chief marketing officer.
