Nine isn't a television business

Nine's new chief executive, Hugh Marks, doesn't see the business as a television one. With Marks saying that rather than being a free-to-air player, Nine is a content business. Marks told The Australian: “I think my agenda here must be how do we continue the growth of this business as a content business rather than necessarily adding more broadcast businesses to the mix.”

Can Nine and News Corp broker NRL rights deal?

News Corp and Nine Entertainment Co are set to have a closed-door meeting this week to see if they can come to an agreement regarding the impasse concerning the National Rugby League broadcast rights, The Australian is reporting. The conversations are concerning New's Fox Sports channel with the two businesses attempting to come to a agreement over which games the channel can broadcast.

Is Fairfax in hot water with the Fair Work Commission?

The Australian is also reporting that former consumer marketing director for Fairfax Media, Vicki Aristidopoulos, has commenced legal action against the publisher after she was allegedly made redundant by the publisher while she was on maternity leave.

MediaWorks CEO says rivals need to band together against the likes of Google

CEO of MediaWorks, Mark Weldon has told The Australian Financial Review that its important that rivals band together to create advertising exchanges in order to compete with the likes of Google and Facebook. Weldon said that while Google is a great business it is really quite scary because they’re big smart and nimble.

Changes in the ranks

The Australian also has a new editor media section. After four years with the paper Darren Davidson is now media editor as Shari Marrkson becomes a senior writer with the paper.
