Last week we spoke to Imagination MD Anthony Gowthorp. Today we head to Melbourne to speak to Nine Entertainment Co group business director Carly Astone.

11 months current role, 12 years at the company.

In one sentence, how would you describe what the company does?

As the home of Australia’s most trusted and loved brands spanning news, lifestyle, entertainment and sport, we create and curate quality content that sits across our broadcast and digital platforms.

In one sentence, what does your role involve?

I lead a team of sales, strategy and client experience specialists, responsible for servicing some of Melbourne’s top clients and agencies.

Within the last six months/year, what stands out as the company’s major milestones?

The last six months has seen Nine complete a major branding project, aligning all of its distribution platforms across broadcast and digital under the Nine dots. This has seen the network launch its video-on-demand product 9Now, and more recently, rebrand our digital network, ninemsn, to be Nine.com.au.

Best thing about the industry you work in:

The people.

This was my first job in media.

Career-wise, where do you see yourself in three years’ time?

At the forefront of wherever this industry takes us in three years.

Tell us one thing people at work don’t know about you?

I was a ballet/tap dancer for 15 years and have recently taken up women’s footy.

Top networking tip:

Never burn your bridges, the industry is too small for that.

My favourite restaurant for a business lunch is:

San Telmo, Melbourne.

My favourite advert is:

Barossa Valley, any TVC with a Nick Cave soundtrack gets my vote.

My must-have gadget is:

My Canon digital-SLR camera.

My favourite media is:

TV, but I may be a little biased.

My favourite TV show is:

It’s a tie between Seinfeld and The Thick of It.

The last book I read:

Stephen Fry, More Fool Me.

My mantra/philosophy is:

Put down your phone and enjoy life.

I got into advertising/ad tech/marketing/media industry because:

It sounded like a fun industry to work in.

If I wasn't doing this for a living, I'd be:

If I could somehow combine my love of cooking, the water and photography… I’d be a very happy woman.

In five years' time I'll be:

At the rate the industry is evolving, it’s impossible to know. I look forward to the journey though.
