Fifth radio ratings: 2GB’s reign weakens

Macquarie Media’s 2GB and 3AW have maintained  dominance in the Sydney and Melbourne markets but both lost their top spot in drive in the fifth radio ratings of the year.

The survey for the periods 26 May to 29 June and 14 July to 17 August covers the Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth market (see charts below).

The ABC had a strong run in Sydney, jumping to second place in the total listenership, breakfast and drive time slots.
Southern Cross Austereo’s 2Day FM continued to struggle, dropping 0.7% in the breakfast slot to retain 2.4% of listeners.

Sydney
Macquarie Media’s 2GB remained on top in the Sydney market despite a dip of 0.6%, resting at 13.4% of total listenership. The station has been dealing with a boycott from advertisers for the past two weeks following backlash over host Alan Jones’ “shove a sock down her throat” comments.

Taking Nova’s Smooth FM’s place in second is ABC Sydney with 9.4% of the audience, up by 1.4 points.

Smooth FM came in third with 9.1% of listenership, down by 0.8%.

It’s followed by WSFM, up by 0.2% to 8.4%. In fifth place is Kiis FM, up by 0.1%, with 8.2% of total listeners.
Nova 96.9 once again came in sixth after a drop of 0.3%, with 7.2% of listeners, followed by Triple M which took 6.1% of listeners, up by 0.1%.

Breakfast breakdown
2GB also maintained its lead in the breakfast slot, taking 17.1% of listeners, down by 0.3% since the last radio ratings survey.

ABC Sydney is up by 1.6 points with 11.5% of listeners, edging out Kiis 106.5 for second place. The ARN radio station came in third, up by 0.1 points, with 11% of listeners.

Keeping hold of its fourth place is WSFM with 8.2% of listeners, down by 0.3 points.

It’s followed by Nova 96.9 which also maintained its position in fifth, with a 7.5% of listeners.

In sixth is Triple M, down by 0.1%, with 5.9% of the audience, followed by 2JJJ with 4.4% of the audience, up by 0.2 points.

Drive time action
Knocking 2GB from its top spot is ABC Sydney with 9.8% of listeners, up by 0.7 points.

In second is Nova 96.9 with 9.5% of the audience, down by 0.5 points.

It’s followed by Kiis FM, up by 0.6%, with 8.9% of listeners.

The Macquarie-owned 2GB came in fourth, down by 1.6 points with 8.7% of the audience.

In fifth with 8.3% of listeners for drive is Smooth FM, down by 0.1%, it’s followed by WSFM with 8.1% of listeners, up by 0.4 points.

In seventh place is Triple M with 7.4% of listeners, up by 0.6 points.

Digital radio wars
Taking the top spot from Double J is Coles radio with 97,000 listeners, up by 22,000 since the last radio ratings.

It’s followed by Edge Digital which once again came in second with 92,000 listeners, up by 15,000.

In third is ABC Jazz with 89,000 listeners, up by 19,000. Double J came in fourth with 80,000, up by 1,000.

Melbourne
Macquarie Media’s 3AW has retained the top spot for Melbourne listenership, with 15.2% of the audience share, down by 0.4% since the last radio ratings.

In second place again, SCA’s 101.9 Fox FM had 10.2% of the audience share with a 0.4% increase since the last radio ratings.

It is followed by ARN’s Gold 104.3, which remains in third place with 9.8%, up by 0.8%.

Nova’s Smooth FM 91.5 took out the fourth spot, with 9.4% of the audience share, up by 0.6%.

In fifth place ABC Melbourne’s audience dropped by 0.3% to 8%.

Nova 100 came in at sixth with 7.2%, dropping 0.3%.

Breakfast breakdown
Taking out the top spot in the breakfast slot is 3AW with 18.6% despite losing 0.9% of audience share.

101.9 Fox FM retained its second place with 10% of the audience, down by 0.5%.

Jumping up to third place from the fourth spot, Nova 100 increased its audience share by 0.4% to 8.6%.

ABC Melbourne slipped down to fourth place, with 8.2% of the audience share, down 0.6%.

Gold 104.3 remained in fifth place with 8% of the audience share, up by 1%.

KIIS 101.1 FM wiped Smooth FM out of sixth place, holding 7.2% of the audience share, up by 0.7%.

Drive time action
Bumping up to first place, 101.9 Fox FM took out the top place for drive with 12.3% of the audience share, up by 1.3%.

Dropping into second place, 3AW held 11.4% of the audience share, down by 0.6%.

It is followed by Gold 104.3 with 10.5% of the audience, up by 1.4%.

In fourth place is Smooth FM, with 9% of the audience share, up by 0.4%.

Nova 100 moved back down to fifth place with 8.9%, up by 0.1%.

In sixth place is KIIS 101.1 FM with 7.6% of the audience, up by 0.4%.

Digital ratings
Coles Radio remains in the top spot with 75,000 listeners, despite losing 1,000 since the last survey.

In second place again is Oldskool Hits with 52,000 listeners, losing 7,000 listeners.

Gold 80s took out third with 50,000 listeners, down 3,000 listeners.

It is followed by Easy Hits, KIIS 90s and Double J all tied in fourth place with 40,000 listeners each. Easy Hits was up 5,000 listeners while KIIS 90s was down 19,000 and Double J was down 18,000.
