Cannes Lions chairman Terry Savage calls out change in Aussie demographics

By AdNews | 19 September 2017

Australia is undergoing significant change, as evidenced by postal plebiscites, a renewed push on developing non-metropolitan areas and a boom in immigration, particularly from the Asian and south-east Asian nations – and media and adland is centre-stage of that change.

As the 2016 Census revealed, Australia is changing and so too is its population. Australia is no longer a nation boasting solely Anglo-Saxon history, Catholicism as its chosen religion, with families of more than two kids, a house in the suburbs and two cars on the drive. Seems those days belong to a time before the 1991 Census.

Terry Savage, chairman at Cannes Lions, is among those AdNews interviewed to get a handle on what is the new “normal”. In this video, he explains why Australia is the ultimate land of super-diversity – and why that makes it so special.

Savage was among several people we accosted on the streets of Sydney to gauge views on our changing demographics, and why addressing this change is so vital for the media and advertising industries.

On 15 November,  AdNews is hosting a half-day event in Sydney - AdNews Live: Reframing Australia is a forum that will dispel myths and set in motion ways in which a re-imagined ‘Straya can take shape in today’s media landscape.

AdNews Live Reframing Australia will explore the disconnect between the industry and our changing demography, and why brands that do not adopt a more representative approach will lose.

The event will look at the cost of creative whitewashing and the business benefits of connecting to Australia’s super-diverse population.
