Aldi says stick your snowy Christmas

Discount supermarket brand Aldi has unveiled its festive ad campaign - full of fun and frolics Aussie-style.

The Christmas campaign was created by BMF and it celebrates all the great things about an Aussie Christmas through the eyes of a character called Johan.

Fresh from a trip down under, Johan returns to his small and somewhat cold village of Julbacken to teach his family and friends about the 'Perfect Aussie Christmas'.

From surfing and cricket in the snow to kangaroo impressions and neon sunscreen, his new-found Aussie teachings do not go down well back home with those stuck in their traditional ways. That is until he introduces Aldi's 'Specially Selected' food range.

Creative director at BMF, Alex Booker, said: "Like any Aussie kid, I’ve grown up feeling our Christmas was inferior to that of our Northern Hemisphere brethren with their trademark white Christmas,” he said.

“It’s time we showed them what it’s like to have an Aussie Christmas and prove that it might just be the perfect way to celebrate Christmas. After all, who can resist a few Aldi prawns and lobster tails after a quick surf and some backyard cricket... even if you have no idea what you’re doing.”

This is Aldi's second major Australian Christmas campaign, following the Surfin’ Santas. The 'Perfect Aussie Christmas', launched yesterday (9 November) with TV, outdoor, radio, catalogue, digital, social, print and POS.

BMF managing partner, Stephen McArdle, said the challenge Aldi set the agency, and themselves, was to keep surprising and delighting customers with the offers, products and advertising in front of them.
