'News to us': V8 Supercars stays mum on Warburton speculation

The former Ten chief has reportedly been approached to take the reins at V8 Supercars.

Reports have emerged today that ousted Ten chief James Warburton has been approached to take the reins at V8 Supercars, but the racing body says "it's news to us".

The Australian Financial Review reported this morning that Warburton is being pursued by V8 Supercars' majority owner, Archer Capital, to take over from current chief executive David Malone.

A spokesperson for V8 Supercars told AdNews: "It's news to us. We don't comment on unsourced speculation." Archer Capital has been approached for comment.

Malone, the former head of Fox Sports, has been in the role since the beginning of last year. The AFR reports that Archer believes the sport needs to be reinvigorated with new management.

V8 Supercars' broadcast deal with Seven, signed earlier this year under Malone's leadership, delivers significantly less cash upfront than its previous deal with Seven, Telstra and Fox Sports.

Warburton, who has extensive TV experience, was replaced by Hamish McLennan as Ten chief in February following a year of programming flops and disastrous ratings.
