Song Zu founder leaves

SYDNEY: Music veteran Les Gock has left production house Song Zu to pursue ÒuntappedÓ sound industry opportunities. Gock and his wife and business partner Margaret Gock have been at the helm of Song Zu for over 25 years. They built it from a small sound studio into a respected producer of award-winning advertising and television soundtracks. Gock said he decided to exit Song Zu after re-evaluating his options for the next 10 years. ÒYou reach a point in your life when you assess what you are doing and where you want to be. IÕd never envisaged the success of Song Zu would ensure it would be around in 25 years. Now itÕs time to let someone else do that,Ó he said. Gock hinted at plans to establish a musical brand consultancy where he would deal with fewer clients in more depth, becoming involved with brand development from the very beginning rather than producing musical signatures. ÒItÕs very surprising it hasnÕt been done before. IÕll see if my experience can mean something.Ó However, he doesnÕt envisage building another musical empire, rather just working as a consultant Òright through the processÓ. He said marketing opportunities such as sports sponsorship and on-hold phone music offered the potential to present a unified sound brand for an advertiser. Song Zu is now owned by a management team of CD Mark Rivett, CD Sydney Ramesh Sathiah, CD Singapore Gerard Fitzgerald, and managing director Ian Lew, who returns after a three year stint at Supersonic. Lew said Song Zu would take the management change as an opportunity to refresh. ÒWe were always a strong brand, but some creatives may look upon it as a bit stale,Ó Lew said.
