SYDNEY: BBC Worldwide is spreading its wings further down under, with plans to launch a new high definition (HD) channel in Australia.
According to media reports in the UK, BBC’s commercial division plans to launch 30 new channels internationally over the next two years, as well as an on-demand service in the US and an HD outlet. Part of this plan includes a new HD channel planned for the likes of Australia, Japan, Italy and South Korea.
BBC Worldwide has been very busy in Australia in recent months, buying a 25% stake in local television production company Freehand Productions in February.
It has also acquired 75% of the Lonely Planet Group, publisher of the legendary Lonely Planet travel guides.
The Melbourne-based group publishes around 500 titles, produces television programs and new media products and has operations in Australia, the UK and the US.
