Seven settles with AFL

SYDNEY: The Seven Network has discontinued legal proceedings against the AFL, following yesterday’s out of court settlement over AFL broadcast rights.

The AFL had been drawn into Seven’s high-profile case relating to the demise of Seven’s subscription TV channel, C7, following the loss of AFL rights in 2002 to Channel Nine, Channel Ten and Foxtel. Seven is seeking more than $1 billion in damages.

The out of court settlement is believed to be a major step forward for Seven in securing AFL broadcast rights for the 2007 to 2011 seasons. Seven is jointly bidding with Network Ten to secure the rights.

Seven’s legal action against some 22 media and sporting bodies continues in the Federal Court.
