Ruby Brus.
In this series, AdNews spotlights young talent in the Australian media, marketing and advertising sector. This time it's Havas Host's strategist Ruby Brus.
Time in current role:
6 Months
How long have you been in the industry?
Three years. But my marketing experience runs much deeper. Prior to agency life, I wore many hats. I spent two years as a marketing scientist at the Ehrenberg-Bass Institute, running client research projects and teaching classes of uni students.
Marketing has been a fixture in my life for a while.
How did you get here? Was this always the plan?
I’ve always loved ads.
From as early as I can remember, I’ve been curious about ads and the impact they have.
This curiosity led me to a bachelor’s in business marketing, followed by a master’s in research where I completed a thesis on distinctive assets – specifically how they’re viewed differently between marketers and consumers. I then entered ad land, eager to put what I’d learnt into practice, I started with a short stint in media and now spend my days strategising.
Who is your right-hand person?
I’ve been lucky to have some pretty great right hands so far. I have a great mentor, Tilly Treloar, as well as Vince Usher and Josh Manning from my time at Thinkerbell.
Today, it’s my girls Liv and Tania, and strategic fairygodmen here at Havas, Phil, Olly and Kevin.
What is the best thing about the industry you work in?
The people. I am truly so lucky to have met different weird and wonderful people so far. They have taught me so much.
Also, the amazing briefs and clients that I've worked on. I’ve learnt a lot from them. The real meaty behaviour change briefs are the rewarding ones and where I feel most challenged.
And the biggest challenge?
Making work that actually works, and is interesting, insightful, and impactful for brands. As an industry, we often prioritise one over the other, when all is important.
Whose job have you set your sights on in the future?
This is a hard one….but our very own Phil Pickering, I am coming for your role. Watch out!
Where do you turn for inspiration?
TV, Music, Fashion.
The comments section.
Kevin’s brain.
My girlfriends.
My favourite advert is:
Tsuruya: Sticking together, no matter what.
I love this ad, simple, entertaining, creative and the product benefit is super clear.
Tell us one thing people at work don’t know about you?
I have an insatiable sweet tooth.
In five years’, time I will be:
Still having fun and making work I’m proud of.
