In this series, AdNews spotlights young talent in the Australian media, marketing and advertising sector. This time it's CarExpert's account manager Marcus Edwards.
Time in current role/time at the company
Just over a year.
How long have you been in the industry?
I’ve been in the media industry for over 5 years.
How did you get here?
I started out as a broadcast coordinator at Nine, learning most of the job at home during the COVID lockdown. During that time, I was lucky to be surrounded by a supportive team, great managers, and one too many virtual Friday quizzes. After a few years, I was given the chance to step up into a broadcast sales executive role, which really honed my sales craft. From there, I was keen to take the next step in my career, which is how I landed at CarExpert.
Was this always the plan?
Not exactly. I never had a clear vision of what I wanted to do after school or uni, but I always knew I wanted to do something business-focused since that was my area of study. When I finished uni and returned from travelling, a friend reached out about a role at Nine. I didn’t fully know what I was getting into, but I went for it - and I’m glad I did.
Who is your right-hand person/who guides you day to day?
Maddie Harris, our Melbourne Sales Director. She’s the person I turn to whenever I’m unsure of something. I trust her opinion and guidance completely.
What’s the best thing about the industry you work in?
It has to be the people. I’ve been fortunate enough to work with some amazing teams throughout my career, and they’ve played a big part in my growth.
And the biggest challenge?
For me personally, the toughest time was during COVID. Not being able to sit alongside and learn from senior salespeople in an office setting was difficult early in my career. Being around an experienced team is such a huge advantage when you’re learning the ropes.
Whose job have you set your sights on in the future?
Mat McNay, our Commercial Director of Media - count your days Mat!
Where do you turn for inspiration?
My biggest inspiration comes from the people around me. I look at colleagues and mentors who have achieved so much, and it motivates me to keep learning, improving, and pushing myself.
In five years’ time I’ll be…
Still in the media industry, hopefully leading a team and making a real impact. My goal is to keep building my career, taking on more responsibility, and helping the next generation of salespeople the same way others have helped me.
