Gid Goldberg
In this series, AdNews spotlights young talent in the Australian media, marketing and advertising sector. This time it's DDB Melbourne's copywriter Gid Goldberg.
Time at the company:
Just over a year and a half.
How long have you been in the industry?
Since the beginning of 2022.
How did you get here? Was this always the plan?
I could lie and say it’s because, in year 8, I watched a show called ‘The Crazy Ones’ with Robin Williams. Never heard of it? Exactly. It got cancelled after one season.
The real reason is that I followed whatever my sister did, like every good little brother does.
So, I studied Advertising at RMIT and left the university as an 'Art Director', and now here I am, a copywriter at DDB Melbourne.
Who is your right-hand person/who guides you day to day?
Pip Dolman is the right hand to my left hand. However, she is leaving me for Europe (booooo, I know, right).
If you're reading this in Amsterdam and want to become friends with a super-talented and funny art director. Message her on LinkedIn or learn more about this Young Gun in her own article here.
And if you’re a solo Art Director in Melbourne or thinking about moving to Melbourne, let’s get coffee.
What’s the best thing about the industry you work in?
The fact you can make anything, within reason. I swear, everyone has had a conversation that starts with “Wouldn’t it be cool if…” but usually, it never amounts to anything. Just a joke between friends at the pub.
I like to think that the industry is having that conversation every day and then going, okay, well, let’s do it. I don’t really know any other industry where that is the case.
That and the free Diet Coke stashes in the fridges.
And the biggest challenge?
Explaining to people that a ‘Copywriter’ doesn’t have anything to do with ‘Copyright’.
Where do you see yourself in five years?
Still explaining to my grandma that a 'Copywriter' doesn't have anything to do with 'Copyright' and, therefore, I don't need to 'upskill' with a Law degree.
Otherwise learning as much as I can and making the best work I can, all while having the most fun that I can. That feels achievable, right?
Where do you turn for inspiration?
Anywhere my mind can switch off and think of anything else but work.
The shower, long drives, caffeine-induced social sports, underneath the Bolte Bridge on a Saturday night, movies, museums, LinkedIn, D&AD Archive, Reddit, friends, YouTube videos reading out Reddit posts, overseas travel when I get leave approved.
The answer is everywhere and anywhere. The more things you experience, the more inspiration you get.
My favourite advert is:
I don't believe anyone has one favourite ad/movie/song — there are too many to choose from. But, as a big fan of FIFA (now EAFC), I do love “Stevenage – Burger King”. It's one of those ideas that make me think, damn, I wish I had thought of that.
Another great one I've been watching on loop is “Old Table - Value City Furniture”. No matter how often I watch this, it makes me laugh.
Tell us one thing people at work don’t know about you?
After three years of working together, Pip only recently found out I was left-handed. So maybe that.
Whose job have you set your sights on in the future
I don’t really think about the title — the only job I want is the one with the best opportunities, surrounded by people I can learn the best from.
Eventually, I would love to tutor at AWARD School or University to pass on all the knowledge and wisdom I’ve been taught as if it were my own.
