By AdNews | 20 December 2017

Our Young Guns profile takes a weekly look at some of the young talent across the advertising, ad tech, marketing and media sector in Australia. It aims to shed light on the varying roles, people and companies across the buzzing industry.

This week we speak to Adstream deputy client services manager, Morgan Turnbull.

How long have you been in the industry?

Six years.

Duration in current role/time at the company:

I have worked at Adstream for three years as a client service executive and have recently been promoted to deputy client services manager.

What were you doing before this job and how did you get this gig?

Prior to working at Adstream I was living in London and travelling around Europe. Before that I was an account executive for a healthcare agency where I learnt a lot about the importance of building great client relationships and attention to detail.

Define your job in one word:

Dynamic

What were your real and cliché expectations of working in the industry?

Work hard, play hard.

How does the reality match up?

It is definitely fast paced and there is never a dull moment.

How would you describe what the company does and what does your role involve?

Adstream helps agencies and marketers distribute their advertising campaigns quickly and efficiently through innovative tech.

My role at Adstream is to help lead the client services team to deliver a consistent high standard of customer experience and work closely with agencies to help deliver their marketing campaigns to television stations on time and without a hitch.

Best thing about the industry you work in:

It is fast paced and no two days are ever the same.

Any major hard learnings in the job so far?

Take everything in your stride and don’t take anything personally.

If you had to switch over to another department, which would it be and why?

Within my current role I get to see a lot of television campaigns going to air and I’m always really interested in the brand strategy behind these campaigns so I think working in marketing would be really insightful.

What's exciting you about the industry right now?

The rapid evolution of emerging tech platforms continues to amaze me and businesses digitally transforming successfully have put the customer at the center of their strategy.

What concerns you about the industry and its future?

The heavy focus on data and analytics means there is potential to lose sight of what’s important, the customer. We are at heart a people-based industry, whereby it’s people who build trust in relationships, business understanding and deliver creative and innovative marketing solutions.

Who's your right hand person/who guides you day to day?

My partner Brendan always helps me put things into perspective and keeps me smiling.

And your almighty mentor that you hope to dethrone?

It’s not really about dethroning anyone for me. My manager and the client service team who I work closely with have such a huge amount of experience within the industry and it’s their energy and passion for providing exceptional customer experience which continues to inspire me.

Career-wise, where do you see yourself in three years and how do you plan on getting there?

I would like to still be working within the advertising industry, I can’t say exactly where but I hope to be continuing to grow and challenge myself as much as possible.

What is the elephant in the room? The thing that no one is talking about – but they should be.

ROI on digital advertising, what does it all mean and how do we know its credible?

Where do you turn for inspiration?

Friends and family. Also getting away from my daily routine and having a digital detox always makes me feel refreshed and inspired.

What don't people know about you?

I am really into interior decorating and have a throw pillow obsession….who doesn’t love stacking and unstacking seven pillows from your bed everyday.

Favourite advert is:

Volkswagen — "The Force" I love how simple and effective this ad is, telling a story simply through visuals and music.

What’s your personal motto?

Hard work pays off.

I got into advertising/ad tech/marketing etc because:

I did my high school work experience at an advertising agency and loved the idea of being part of turning small ideas into something much bigger.

If I wasn't doing this for a living, I'd be:

Travelling or working with animals.
