Our Young Gun profile takes a look at some of the young talent across the advertising, adtech, marketing and media sector in Australia. It aims to shed light on the varying roles, people and companies across the buzzing industry.

Today we speak to Vamp social media assistant Maddison Johnston.

Time in current role/time at the company:
I’ve been full time in this role for just over a year, but I’ve been at Vamp since August 2019.

How long have you been in the industry?
Just a year and a half. I first started as an intern at Vamp and that was my first experience in the industry.

How did you get here? Was this always the plan?
This was not the plan at all! During college, I wanted to be a fashion buyer. But after my six-week internship at Vamp, working within the marketing and implementation teams, I knew I wanted to stay. I loved the work and learning about social media. Plus the culture was like nothing I’d ever experienced. In February 2020 I officially joined full time.

Who is your right hand person/who guides you day to day?
My incredible boss and Vamp’s head of content Lauren Thomas. Lauren has taught me so much about social media marketing, writing content and of course the influencer marketing industry. I also teach her a couple of things here and there - including memes and TikTok trends!

What’s the best thing about the industry you work in?
The creativity blows my mind. At Vamp, we work with some of the most creative and innovative creators around the globe. What our community manages to create - even during lockdown - is incredible.

And the biggest challenge?
Keeping up with the ever-changing trends of social media and influencer marketing. It’s relentless! To succeed you need to be at the forefront of everything that’s happening in this space. You basically need to be a social media encyclopaedia.

Whose job have you set your sights on in the future?
Somewhere in social media marketing at TikTok. I love using the app (sometimes for hours and hours a day) and I think it offers something really innovative in the space. It would be a dream to work there.

Where do you turn for inspiration?
Everywhere! Social media, television, movies, books, podcasts. I once read that if you’re creating content, you need to gain inspiration from all forms of content. Our creator community also inspires me on a daily basis. They produce some of the best social content I’ve seen.

My favourite advert is:
The viral World Record Egg on Instagram. Smashing Kylie Jenner’s record for likes is what social advertising dreams are made of! It was a genius way to use social media to capture the attention of millions of people, then advertise something so important as mental health. And yes, I was one of the 52M+ people who liked the egg.

Tell us one thing people at work don’t know about you?
I went viral on TikTok. I wish I could say I got a million views from sharing social media tips - but it was actually from falling over in an attempt to do high jump at my final high school athletics carnival. Proof that you can never tell what will go viral!

In five years' time I'll be:
Hopefully traveling the world again and visiting my dream locations like Egypt, Morocco and the Greek Islands.
