What to do at home when I'm bored - and other searches breaking the internet

Adjusting to a new way of life amid the COVID-19 crisis - working from home, shopping and entertaining - is being reflected in online searches.

Unsurprisingly, those related to setting up a home office figure prominently but "what to do at home when I am bored" is skyrocketing, according to a new report by performance marketing agency Performics.

Performics' report showed five key categories that have had a significant increase in the way Australians have been searching.

Using Google trends data, it found marked percentage increase week-on-week from March 4-17 in search terms for: 

  • Covid related product: Home equipment 166%, office chairs 53%, hand sanitizer 148%, disposable gloves 114%, face masks 57%
  • Self isolation: Workout routines 92%, home gyms 81%, tips to how to work from homes 99%, what to do from home when I am bored 172%
  • Media consumption: As the country looks to a sports-free autumn, streaming services are in hotter-than-ever on-demand.  Disney+ free trial has seen a 123% yoy increase, what arevthe best shows on Netflix $46%, Amazon Prime 20%.
  • Shopping-related: There has been a 406% increase in the search term “buy groceries online”. In terms of indvidual items, toilet paper still dominates the charts at toilet paper at 753%, rice 489%, pasta 375% and beer delivery 215%.
