Schapelle Corby and Ebola may have been all over Facebook this year, but neither were the most talked-about topic on the social network. Facebook has released its 2014 Year in Review, with the death of Robin Williams emerging as the most talked about topic in Australia.
The list collates the stories, trends and places which were most shared across the social media network over the year. Following Williams, Australia spent 2014 buzzing about Prime Minister Tony Abbott and the disasters surrounding Malaysia Airlines.
Aussies are still obsessed with the national past-time – sport – with NRL team, the south Sydney Rabbitohs which won the grand final this year and the Melbourne Cup both making the top 10 list.
However, our favourite place to visit? According to Facebook, the most checked-into place in Australia was Darling Harbour in Sydney followed by the Sydney Opera House, proving even Aussies love the view in their own backyard. Last year the Melbourne Cricket Ground took the 'Most Checked-into' trophy, but the venue only hit number three on the list this year.
Australia followed a similar path to other nations, with Robin Williams, Ebola virus, Ice Bucket Challenge, the conflict in Gaza and Malaysia Airlines, appearing in top 10 lists both here, in the US and on a globally collated list
