What are the most watched ads on YouTube?

Airlines dominate the top three spots on the most watched ads leaderboard for Q4, WIth Air New Zealand, KLM and Qantas landing huge numbers.

Chris Dodson, head of large advertiser and agency marketing at Google Australia, takes us through the list. Watch all the ads below.

Cats, your days of owning the internet are numbered. When you look at the ads that Australia has been watching on YouTube recently, we are actually tuning in to dogs, turkeys and hobbits. In fact, Toyota have cleverly built on our cat obsession by creating a spot specifically for YouTube that tells people looking for kittens never to set foot in a Hilux.

The top of the leaderboard this quarter is dominated by a battle for the skies, with Air New Zealand claiming top spot for the second time this year with a four and a half minute long safety demonstration video featuring Elijah Wood.

QANTAS is pipped for second place, largely because its new Feels like Home ad by Lawrence Creative was uploaded only a couple of weeks ago.

KLM found itself it with a global hit on its hands by following a KLM beagle as it apparently tracked down passengers who had left items on board.

What’s also interesting about the leaderboard this time round is that no one genre stands out as a way of reaching audiences.

KMart are winning over potential customers with ‘howto’ fashion tips, Wild Turkey are making us laugh, Nurofen are educating us about our bodies and Chanel are wowing us with unadulterated (and slightly adult rated) glamour. In other words, there is more than one way to skin a cat.

The leaderboard is calculated using an algorithm that factors in paid views, organic views and view rate (how much of a video people chose to watch). Due to print deadlines the Leaderboard period is 1 October-24 November.
