Watchdog: Would a barista really drink Nescafe Gold Barista Style?

By AdNews | 17 September 2015

This man is not a barista.

As featured in AdNews magazine, Watchdog is a mighty defender of consumers against marketing and advertising claims.

Nescafé Gold Barista style is positioned as a favourite by “those who know great coffee”. But would a barista really prefer to drink an instant coffee before they go to work at a coffee shop? Watchdog asked the makers of some of the best cups of joe in Surry HIlls - nay, Sydney - if they drank Nescafé.

AdNews: Do you drink Nescafé Gold Barista?

Franz, Cafe Foveaux: I don’t drink Nescafé.

AdNews: Why not?

Franz: Because I make coffee at work. I don’t like instant coffee, either. I prefer barista-made coffee, it tastes better. I might have an instant coffee once every few months if there is nothing else around.

Krit, Taste Cafe: No, I don’t drink Nescafé.

AdNews: Why not?

Krit: I like fresh coffee because it tastes better.

Natalie, Pronto Cafe: No.

AdNews: Why not?

Natalie: I don’t drink instant coffee. I have coffee here.

FINAL RECKONING:

One of the funniest jokes Watchdog has ever seen in its many years of puppy life was an article called ‘Becoming an instant coffee snob’, because the world – and the makers of Nescafé Gold Barista – know that this is an oxymoron. And if you weren’t sure, the response from actual coffee making professionals, not to mention the look of disgust in their eyes, makes this clear. Would any self-respecting barista lay their hands on a jar of instant coffee? Swift and brutal – computer says no.
