Verizon Media has appointed Euan Black as Yahoo's director of content for Australia and New Zealand.

Black is currently head of news, sport and lifestyle at Yahoo Australia. In his new role, Black will lead all local editorial and video output for the Yahoo brands.

In his nearly five-year tenure at Yahoo Australia, Black has achieved record growth for the news, sport and lifestyle brands with traffic up across all sites on average by 18% in the last year and the number of days visited per user per month up 20% year-on-year.

“Euan has been integral to our growth over the past few years. His passion to deliver world-class breaking news coverage is admirable and he has a real skill in building wider engaged audiences,” says senior director of content AUNZ INSEA Simon Wheeler.

“I look forward to working with him closely on our regional strategy and growing our audience further as we launch new, targeted content initiatives.”

In May, Verizon Media, which includes brands such as Yahoo, AOL, RYOT and TechCrunch, was sold to private equity firm Apollo Global Management for US$5 billion.

“We have one of the most exciting young digital newsrooms in Australia and it’s an honour to lead such a brilliant team,” Black says.

“The Australian media landscape has never been more competitive but Yahoo continues to stand out from the crowd, whether it's through our exceptional breaking news coverage or initiatives like our What's Up? Mental health series. I look forward to continuing to grow our audience and help bring many more of the team's exciting ideas to life."
