Financial technology company Airwallex has appointed Antonio Thewissen as director of marketing for Australia and New Zealand.

Antonio Thewissen joins Airwallex from Uber where he was marketing lead for Uber for Business for the last year and a half.

Thewissen previously held senior roles in the APAC marketing teams at Anaplan and Aveva, as well as previously working as marketing manager at Schneider Electric and APAC marketing manager for GE.

He will report to Airwallex’s global director of marketing, Jon Stona. Jon is ex Nike, Google and Stripe.

Thewissen said: “There's a huge opportunity to tell Airwallex’s story and how we fit into making the lives of business owners and everyday Australians easier.

"I’m excited to be part of a business that is on such an incredible growth trajectory. It’s rare in Australia to be able to join a company at this stage that has such a clear proposition to make to new customers.

“There’s hundreds of billions of dollars made in payments and transactions each year in Australia and we’re here to help business owners grow and expand both domestically and abroad.”

Airwallex has also appointed Nick Creevey as associate director of corporate affairs for ANZ.

Creevey joins Airwallex after finishing up as a press secretary for the Australian Government, having worked for Prime Minister Scott Morrison and then-Education Minister Simon Birmingham for seven years.

Creevey was previously part of the Group Public Affairs team at the Commonwealth Bank, and a consultant for n2n communications where he worked on accounts including Facebook and American Express.

Creevey reports to senior vice president and global head of corporate affairs, Susan Ho who is ex Standard Chartered and Brunswick Group.

Nick Creevey, associate director of corporate affairs for ANZ, said: “There’s some significant challenges Australia faces as the Government works to adapt its systems to ensure more new payments services can compete with incumbents, and at Airwallex we want to help shape that.

“After all, more competition from newer providers like Airwallex means lower costs for the tens of thousands of Australian businesses and their millions of customers who use payment services almost everyday.

“As one of Australia’s most successful new fintechs, Airwallex has a great story to tell and products that are going to help businesses do business anywhere, anytime.”

Airwallex’s director of strategy for Australia and New Zealand, Amelia Hamer, said: “It’s great to have Antonio and Nick on board to round out our senior marketing and communications team in Australia and New Zealand.

“Australia is an important market for Airwallex - it’s where we started and there’s significant opportunity to work with more customers and businesses on everything from their payments, treasury, spend and embedded finance."
