Each month Fabulate’s head of strategy and talent Lucy Ronald looks at the biggest trends and sounds on TikTok over the past month and why it’s been taking over our algorithms.

In April, Coachella went retro, creators turned dessert preferences into chaotic performances, and everyone pretended to hate the attention they were clearly thriving on. Here’s a wrap of the top trends you (and I!) couldn’t scroll past this month:

1. Coachella 2016

April saw Coachella creators throwing it way back with old-school filters, 2016 festival fits (think fringe, chunky belts, tiny denim shorts) and nostalgic throwback tracks. It’s all about giving Tumblr-era, VSCO edits, and the golden age of festival fashion. TikTok’s been living for the blast from the past.

2. Doing X depending on how much I like the dessert

Creators are using a viral trivia-style sound that lists desserts, reacting with bigger and crazier moves as their favourites come up. Petting their dog turns into a full-on wrestle, a little dance explodes into an all-out performance. It’s funny, wacky, and everyone’s putting their own spin on it.

3. Probably needed a hug, did X instead

For those moments when you probably needed a hug but did something else entirely. Whether it’s buying a dog, booking a spontaneous trip, or just seeing your bestie, creators are using Adele’s soaring vocals to dramatise their emotionally-fuelled choices.

4. I hate attention

For when you claim you hate attention... but everything you’re doing says otherwise. It’s all about main character moments: filming in public, dramatic entrances, causing a scene - all paired with the perfectly sarcastic “I hate attention” caption and George Michael’s Father Figure.

5. God Forbid

The most overly dramatic way to defend yourself over something completely harmless. This trend hits when you clap back at a comment with “God Forbid,” like you’ve committed a major crime. (God forbid I’m excited when I talk. God forbid I tell the group chat first.) It’s dramatic, painfully relatable, and soundtracked to The Commodores’ Easy.
