Thursday is the most popular day of the week for podcast downloads, according to the Australian Podcast Ranker.

The end-of-year insights from the ranker, released by Commercial Radio Australia (CRA) and Triton Digital, found that 17% of podcasts are downloaded on Thursday, followed by Tuesday and Wednesday, at 16.2% and 16.1% downloads, respectively.

Radio show catch-ups are the most popular genre, with 101.3 million downloads this year, followed by true crime, with 67.6 million downloads, comedy, with 63.5 million downloads, and news, with 51.9 million downloads.

Publishers in the ranker delivered more than 420.8 million podcast livestreams or downloads from January to the end of November.

“2020 has been an outstanding year for podcasting, with the Australian Podcast Ranker now tracking 2,600 active podcasts across a wide range of genres and publishers,” says Joan Warner, chief executive officer of industry body Commercial Radio Australia.

“Radio show podcasts were the most active category in 2020, with 101.3 million downloads. This is no surprise as it echoes the strong popularity of radio through the pandemic and reflects the established audiences these shows already have.”

An average 1.9 hours of podcast content was downloaded per device per week in November, up from 1.7 in hours in January.

The radio industry started tracking the most downloaded and listened to podcasts in Australia this year and now includes publishers such as Southern Cross Austereo, News Corp Australia, Schwartz Media and Nova Entertainment.
