Under-16s will be banned from using social media in the UK by spring of 2027, as announced by Prime Minister Keir Starmer.

The decision follows a government consultation, in which 89% of the surveyed parents and carers said they strongly supported a legal minimum age for social media access.

88% of which strongly agreed that age should be under-16s.

Snapchat, TikTok, Youtube, Instagram, Facebook and X, will be banned for under 16's moving forward.

Messaging services such as WhatsApp and Signal will not be included in the restrictions.

Technology minister Liz Kendall described the ban as a "defining moment for our children."

The ban will work similarly to the Australian restrictions, with young people needing to participate in age verification.

The government’s full response to the consultation will be published in July.

“This is a line in the sand. Tech giants had their chance and failed, but we’re stepping in to protect children, back parents and set a new normal for future generations,” said Starmer.
