Headshot of Jordan Baker

The new editor at Nine's Sydney Morning Herald, Jordan Baker, has started in her role.

She replaces Bevan Shields, who stepped down as editor in November, citing personal reasons.

Jordan Baker served as chief reporter for more than three years and education editor for four years before that. She has worked as a journalist since 2005.

"I started working at the Sydney Morning Herald as a young journalist 20-odd years ago. I'm so excited to now lead this wonderful masthead, which is so deeply embedded in the fabric of this city," said Baker.

She will sit alongside editor of The Age, Patrick Elligett, and national editor David King, all reporting to Luke McIlveen, executive editor.

Shields returns as a senior writer today.
