Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey has opened to $13.5 million across Australia over its Thursday to Sunday opening weekend, delivering 587,000 admissions and the biggest opening weekend of the year to date.
The result is the biggest Australian opening since A Minecraft Movie in April 2025. Globally, the film took $US264 million in its opening weekend, the biggest global opening of Nolan's career and the second biggest IMAX opening ever behind Avengers: Endgame.
The Odyssey helped drive a record weekend across Australian cinemas, with more than 1.21 million admissions and $24 million in total box office revenue — the biggest box office weekend and highest admissions result of 2026, and the strongest since Superman opened in July 2025. Other titles contributing to the result included Moana, Minions and Monsters and Toy Story 5.
Guy Burbidge, managing director of Val Morgan Cinema, said the result reinforced cinema's ability to deliver cultural moments, with audiences seeking out premium immersive experiences.
"Not only has the film delivered the biggest opening of the year, but you will be lucky to get a ticket at some screens until mid-August,'" he said.
“What's also been fascinating to see is the cultural conversation extending well beyond the box office, with audiences taking to social media with tongue-in-cheek posts about watching the film 'as Nolan intended.”
