The advertising industry is a people business, run by creative people who sell creativity to brands.

But where do they come from? How do they rise to the top of the executive heap?

Investment bank BNP Paribas recently took a deep dive into the backgrounds of 150 leaders at WPP, Publicis and S4 Capital, including founders, directors, regional leaders and entrepreneurs.

Analysts did an audit, researched senior managers, looked at where they came from and where they used to work.

“The conclusion is clear: while the vast majority of Publicis and WPP leaders come from the traditional advertising space, S4 capital talent pool is much more diverse and more tech orientated,” write the analysts in a note to clients.

“We note that post the Epsilon acquisition, Publicis has less exposure to traditional agency executives than WPP.” Technology platform Epsilon was acquired by Publicis in 2019 for $US3.95 billion.
