Telstra is launching a geo-targeted mobile loyalty scheme that offers customers localised discounts and deals based on personal preferences.

The mobile app scheme, Telstra Treats, has been developed by Vivant and was soft launched in Sydney's CBD this month. Telstra is soon take the app to small businesses in the local area to expand the pilot and offer more rewards.

Telstra Treats ranges from a free cup of coffee at your local cafe to designer clothing from a retailer in your area.

It claims to be “an exciting new app that sends you special offers based on your location and interests. Want an offer on coffee on your way to work? Or how about a discount on some designer clothes? Telstra Treats is a new app that offers just-for-you treats based on what you tell us you like and where you are.”

Users tell the app their age, gender and how much they like eating out, shopping and going out and Telstra serves adds for discounts that match in the local area.

Treats is available for all Telstra customers and offers a number of discounts, rewards and offers for local restaurants, cafes and shops available within a limited time.

The offers and deals each user receives will be tailored to how they respond and interact with the app and it will “learn” what each user likes and give them more of the same.

Current offers include deals on haircuts, group meal discounts and free coffee and dessert. It also offers time limited deals on discounted Telstra contracts and handsets, and directs users to their nearest Telstra store.

Offers are also targeted by location so users will receive push notifications for nearby offers. The app features a map so that Telstra customers can search around them for deals to redeem.

A Telstra spokesperson confirmed that the trial is in a “soft launch” phase and that it would be gathering feedback from both customers and small businesses involved before making any moves to roll it out beyond the Sydney CBD.

The app is a product from Telstra Labs.
