Swinburne University of Technology will shut its X (formerly Twitter) account, "consciously uncoupling" from the social media platform at the end of the month.
“X has served us well in the past, but we are now seeing stronger engagement and more meaningful interactions on our other social media channels,” Swinburne’s director of communications and media Matt Macklin said.
“X platform trust and usage, especially among staff and the academic/research community has declined since the platform was acquired by Elon Musk and operational and content changes were made.
“We’re proud to be adapting to technological and audience shifts, focusing on where we can better connect with our community and continue to share the stories that make Swinburne special."
Senior lecturer in media at Swinburne Dr Belinda Barnet says this move represents a positive change for minority groups who often face negative experiences on the app.
“X is profoundly toxic right now, especially for minorities, for women, for Indigenous peoples and for trans people,” Barnet said.
“I’m supportive of this move and it shows that the university is supportive of these groups as well.”
Swinburne academics will still be allowed to use X in line with university policy.
