Spider-Man: Brand New Day attracted 1.46 million admissions and $30.4 million across its Thursday to Sunday opening weekend to secure the second biggest opening of all time for a film in Australia.
The result puts Spider-Man: Brand New Day just behind the $34 million opening of Avengers: Endgame in 2019 and ahead of the $27.3 million debut of Star Wars: The Force Awakens in 2015.
Across the full Australian market, the box office generated $39.2 million over the weekend, the second biggest weekend in Australian box office history.
Saturday, August 1 also became the biggest single day in Australian box office history, grossing $12.6 million nationwide.
Globally, Spider-Man: Brand New Day opened to $927 million, the second biggest worldwide debut of all time behind Avengers: Endgame, which opened with $1.2 billion in 2019.
Guy Burbidge, managing director of Val Morgan Cinema, said the result reflected cinema's cultural pull.
"Pure and simple, Spider-Man: Brand New Day is yet another example of a huge cultural moment that Cinema is famous for," Burbidge said.
"It delivers brands all the right media ingredients – urgency, anticipation, excitement, experience and conversation.
“On the strength of these fantastic weekend results, we have increased our delivery expectations; the brands that are leaning in are benefitting from what is on track to be the biggest film of the year."
Burbidge said the result built on a strong period for the industry.
"July generated more than $131 million at the Australian box office, becoming the fourth consecutive month to surpass $100 million for the first time ever,” he said.
“July was also the highest-grossing month since the Barbenheimer phenomenon in July 2023.
"The results throughout this year have been consistently strong, with first half audiences up 16% year on year and now with the release of The Odyssey and Spider-Man: Brand New Day, that momentum is carrying well into the second half.”
