Independent Media Agencies New Zealand (IMANZ) has appointed Simon Teagle its first chief executive officer.

Teagle brings three decades of agency experience, having held senior roles at DDB, Saatchi & Saatchi, ZenithOptimedia and FCB Media.

He most recently spent eight years as general manager at Go Media, New Zealand’s largest locally owned outdoor advertising company.

IMANZ, launched in 2023, now represents more than 90% of New Zealand-owned independent media agencies, with 42 member agencies and 28 partners.

The move to a CEO-led structure marks a shift from its founding general manager model, signalling a longer-term commitment to the sector.

“IMANZ has achieved a great deal in a short time which is a credit to the members, partners and the team driving it forward,” Teagle said.

“Having worked with both independent and global agencies I know their different operating models, which is why I am a champion for the innovation and stronger publisher relationships that independents deliver.

“I want to actively build on our momentum and create more opportunities for our members to win more business, strengthen relationships with publishers and deliver better outcomes for clients.

“The upshot will be stronger outcomes for New Zealand’s marketers, a big boost for the local economy by supporting truly local businesses, which will help media suppliers invest in the talent and products that attract audiences.”

IMANZ chair Alex Radford said the appointment comes at a critical time for independents navigating industry change.

“IMANZ has always been about giving New Zealand’s independents a stronger voice and creating a level playing field with the bigger networks,” he said.

“We have built a solid base of members and partners, but the most important work is still ahead of us as the pace of change across the industry continues to accelerate, posing increasing challenges for businesses at all levels.”

Radford also acknowledged outgoing general manager Kath Mitchell for her role in establishing the organisation.

“Kath’s leadership has been pivotal in our growth as an organisation,” he said.

“She played a key role in building member and partner trust, enhancing our advocacy efforts and laying strong operational foundations for the future.”

IMANZ has developed relationships with local and international bodies including IMAA, IAB, NPA, OOHMAA and RBA, and is focused on ensuring New Zealand majority-owned businesses can compete and grow in an evolving media environment.
