The journalists union, the MEAA, wants the news media bargaining legislation to be changed to ensure revenue from the digital platforms goes to journalism.

Adam Portelli, the director of the media section of MEAA, told a Senate hearing today that most parties agreed that’s where the money should be spent.

“Last week when representatives from News Corp and Nine provided evidence they … in a general sense ... accepted that principle, that where possible those revenues should be going towards the newsroom,” Portelli said.

“For us it is a matter of principle that the funds go to the right places.

“So why isn't it a provision in the code and why isn't it a mandatory provision that any revenues go toward journalistic purposes?

He was answering a question from Greens Senator Sarah Hansen-Young.
