Scire Media's Capital Brief builds out team

Capital Brief, the flagship publication of Scire Media, has named the journalists coming on board to the startup media player.

In an email this morning to those signed up to the Scire/Capital Brief waiting list, editor-in-chief John McDuling said that Capital Brief’s goal is to be a valuable source of intelligence for the people building the new Australian economy.

"With this in mind, we’ve spent the past few months putting together a stellar newsroom ahead of launch. For me personally, it has been a fascinating and rewarding process," he said.

James Arbuthnott has been appointed deals correspondent, joining from Mergermarket where he has covered the mining and energy sectors. 

Kate Burgess has been appointed natural resources, climate and energy correspondent. Burgess previously served as editor of Mergermarket’s infrastructure news service in Asia and also held senior roles at BRW and the Financial Review. Most recently, she was editor of the sustainability business publication The Fifth Estate.

Andrew Cornell has been appointed associate editor, banking and finance. Cornell joins from ANZ’s in-house publication bluenotes, where he was founding managing editor. Before that, he held several senior positions at the AFR including associate editor and north Asia correspondent, based in Japan.

Bronwen Clune has been appointed startups and venture capital correspondent. Clune has previously served as the editor-at-large of StartupSmart and as columnist for The Guardian.

Jack Derwin has been appointed markets and finance correspondent. Derwin has previously held senior roles at Business Insider Australia, Your Money and The Asahi Shimbun in Japan.

Jennifer Duke has been appointed economics correspondent, based in Canberra. Duke was previously economics correspondent for The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age based in Parliament House and has also been a business journalist focused on media and telecommunications for the Nine newspapers.

Anthony Galloway has been appointed chief political correspondent, having worked at The Age, Herald-Sun and The Sydney Morning Herald. 

Laurel Henning has been appointed legal and regulatory affairs correspondent. Henning joins from MLex where she spent a decade covering topics ranging from competition law and data privacy to white collar crime and criminal cartel legislation.

Adam Rollason has been appointed senior editor, audience and production, previously having worked at Meta, Bloomberg, the Financial Review and the ABC.

Dan Van Boom has been appointed technology correspondent, covering issues ranging from artificial intelligence to cybersecurity and big tech and joining Capital Brief from CNET.

Philip Wen has been appointed associate editor, business and geopolitics. Wen most recently worked for The Wall Street Journal and before that, Reuters and The Sydney Morning Herald.
