Online searches in Australia are increasingly triggering an AI overview, according to digital agency Rocket which analysed 70 million keywords across 50 plus websites and key search platforms.
The study found that 16% of Australian searches bring an AI overview, with health, science, people & society, legal and education sectors most affected.
"We wanted to go beyond opinions and hype," said Rocket co-founder James Lawrence.
“This research gives marketers clarity on what's real in AI search and where they need to focus to drive visibility and results.
The study, published in a whitepaper, The Future of Search in Australia: AI and SEO, shows that more than 90% of queries with an AI overview are informational in nature, impacting blogs and pages with long-tail keywords.
Other key findings include that 70% of large language model queries are prompts to write, summarise or explain rather than traditional search queries. ChatGPT drives 70% of AI search traffic, followed by Perplexity at 19% and Gemini at 6.7%.
The research found that 80% of the top three preview links in AI overviews overlap with the top 10 organic results on Google search results pages, while 25% of links in SearchGPT results match domains from the top 10 organic results.
Rocket has expanded its SEO services to include generative AI SEO, helping brands appear in AI-powered platforms including Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity.
"AI search has raised the standard for SEO. Our team is prepared to help businesses show up and be found in these new search experiences," said Rocket head of SEO Joe Alder.
