REA has hired former Interbrand CEO Kieren Cooney as its first chief marketing officer.

Cooney joins REA after more than 20 years in senior marketing and telecommunications roles including his most recent position at brand consultancy Interbrand. Prior to that, he was MD of DDB and held CMO positions with NBN Co and Telecom New Zealand.

Cooney will report to CEO Tracey Fellows who says the creation of the CMO role supports the brand's global expansion.

“Over the years, realestate.com.au has grown to become a much-loved brand among people looking to sell, rent or buy their home. There’s a tremendous opportunity to build on that brand in sectors that represent a natural extension of what we do well.

“The creation of the CMO role was designed to support REA Group’s expanding global footprint as well as its growth into property related services.

“We are excited by what Cooney can offer the business with his world-class experience. He will drive our global marketing strategy."

The move follows REA's recent expansion into lifestyle, which will see the News Corp-owned company deliver on its promise to double editorial output this year.

Cooney says: “The opportunity to be part of a business with a clear ambition to help people navigate some of the biggest decisions of their lives was very appealing.”
