Melbourne: Rocksteady?

The Melbourne FM market remains tight with little daylight between the frontrunners. The latest audience survey data suggests a broadly stable market, with only mild swings between stations.

The AM stations remain out in front, with 3AW dipping slightly to a 13.6 share across all demographics. The ABC dropped 0.7 per centage points.

Fox FM still has a nose in front of the FM pack with a 7.8% share overall, but Gold closed the gap, picking up 0.4 percentage points to end up with a 7.6% share. A 0.5 percentage point spurt for Nova (now on a 7.3% share) and a similar fall for Triple M (to 7.1%) completed the pecking order reshuffle. Smooth dipped slightly to take a 6.4% share of the total Melbourne market, according to GfK's panel data.

Of the smaller stations, NEWSR made the biggest gains relative to its total audience, adding listeeners across all demographics bar the youth market.

Across all stations, the data suggests most movement in the evening sessions. In terms of demographics, the standout shifts were a big drop off in listeners aged 25-39 for Triple M, which shed around a third of its audience in that demographic, the panel data suggests, athough it attracted around 20% more listeners aged 18-24 and made gains in the 40-54 aged group.

Baby boomers appeared to switch from Smooth, with listeners aged 55-64 dropping by 3.1 percentage points, although it made slight gains across most other demographics, notably in the youth category.

Perth: Nova rising

ARN-owned Mix 94.5 won overall in Perth, but youth-oriented Nova Enetertainment-backed Nova 93.7 is slowly gaining ground.

According to the latest GFK figures, overall Mix won out with a 13.9% share of the overall market, followed by Nova with a 13.7% share on the back of a 1.2 point gain.

While Nova gained, Mix dipped by half a point.

Should the momentum continue in the same direction, Nova could parlay its dominance of the youth market into an overall win.

Nova won out in the 10-17, 18-24, and 25-39 markets with solid gains accross the demographics.

Mix skewed older, taking out the 40-54 and 55-64 demographics, despite a dip of 2 points in the former.

Mix still has a hold on the morning and afternoon slots, poulling 15.6 and 15.9% shares respectively, but Nova is starting to gain ground in the afternoon pulling 14.2% on the back of a 2.1 point gain.

Meanwhile ABC720 just edged Nova out for the breakfast market, but again Nova is closing the gap.

Nova took out the vital drive market, adding 1.2 points to 16.6% while its main rivals for the slot Mix and 6JJJ both lost ground.

It also gained ground in the evening where ABC720 still holds a lead, but the gap between ABC and Nova shortened from, 2.1 points to 0.8 points during the survey period.
