By AdNews | 22 October 2025

September’s results from the Australian Podcast Ranker, conducted by the Commercial Radio and Audio (CRA) in partnership with Triton Digital, reveals a growing cultural gap between AFL and NRL audiences.

Almost half (49.6%)of AFL fans consume sports podcasts, followed by the preferences of history at 32%, society and culture at 30.3% and news and technology at 30.2%.

37.7% of NRL fans listen to sports while their next preferences are music at 27.4%, technology at 25.3%, and business and comedy at 23.3%, according to Demos+ data.

This provides advertisers and brands with key insight into how to tailor campaigns based on tone, creative and ad placement and better align themselves with the listening habits of each group, particularly for key sporting moments.

“The Podcast Ranker delivers what every advertiser needs: certainty,” said Lizzie Young, CEO of CRA.

“Verified data showing exactly who's listening, what they care about, and how to reach them when they're most receptive.”

The top ranked genres for September were news, society and culture, sports, true crime and comedy.

The most popular podcast shows were Hamish and Andy, ABC News Top Stories, Mamamia Out Loud, Shameless and Sky News Australia Update.
