PHD Australia was placed first in the 2021 AFR Boss Best Places to Work list for media and advertising.

The top 10 in order: PHD, L&A Social Media, King Kong, Half Dome, OMD Australia, Active International, Hatched Media, M&C Saatchi, AFFINITY, Hotglue.

The assessment is made up of a staff survey and a written submission on policies, practices and programs. The methodology is underpinned by Inventium's Workplaces of the Future framework, which identifies ten factors to employees feeling motivated and engaged.

"We have really worked hard on developing a deeper intrinsic understanding of people’s need to grow and develop,” says Mark Jarrett, CEO of PHD Australia.

“This award is a reflection of everyone in the business and their collective commitment to developing the business, the culture and each other."

L&A Social Media CEO and founder, Gina Lednyak: “We’re very excited to end the year as an AFR Best Place to Work and proud to be the top ranking independent agency in the media category.

"L&A launched in 2012 with the purpose of creating a positive impact on the world around us by connecting people, brands and innovation, and always leaving things better than we found them. For us this means creating the best place to work so we can create a positive ripple effect on the world around us! We’re so proud to be officially recognised by the AFR as a Best Place To Work and grateful to our L&Awesome team who make it possible.”

King Kong (coming in third) founder Sabri Suby: “Having fun is not just about baristas and ping pong tables in the office. A strong and defined culture is palpable and will attract the right talent.

"Your business’ culture is so important in setting the tone for how enjoyable, purposeful, dynamic, supportive and challenging it is to be part of your team. I expect a lot from my team, but my job as their leader is to make sure their workplace first gives them even more.

"The team need to actually enjoy being at work — if they do, they will smash it"

Half Dome (fourth) People & Culture Lead Lisa Lie says: “It’s amazing to know that nearly 700 organisations were nominated and a small business like Half Dome has placed fourth.

“We truly believe happy people are motivated people, and I think this is what has helped us achieve not only appearing on the list, but being placed number fourth, and ultimately having our culture recognised in this setting is so rewarding to us.”

OMD Australia CEO Aimee Buchanan: "We are proud to have been awarded 5th in the AFR Boss Best Places to Work Media and Marketing category. We attribute our success to the long term sustainable approach we have across our business, in particular for our people.

"We have continued to adapt what we do – from flexible working policies (before flexibility was a given), to driving a diversity and inclusion agenda, to making OMD a place where parents can thrive. Our philosophy is to focus on our people professionally, personally and with purpose.

"This is something that did not stop during Covid as we migrated our development and culture programs virtually, with the aim to grow and connect when we needed it most. We continue to evolve and innovate, we don’t settle and we are always looking for new ways to improve."
