Channel Nine has announced Karl Stefanovic will be leaving the network effective immediately.
The decision came after Stefanovic hosted controversial activist Tommy Robinson on his independent podcast, The Karl Stefanovic Show.
A move which also led to campaign group, MFW, calling for an ad boycott of the broadcaster.
“Nine Entertainment and Karl Stefanovic have agreed that it is no longer possible for him to continue hosting Today at the same time as his independent podcast,” a spokesperson said.
“While Karl and Nine had previously agreed he would leave Today at the end of this year, they have subsequently decided he will leave the Network immediately.”
Stefanovic has since responded to Nine’s dismissal via his YouTube channel.
“So I’m free. Truly independent,” he said.
Stefanovic had been with the network for more than two decades.
