Nine has promoted Anthony Smyth to the newly created national role of commercial director for radio.

Smyth was previously the network’s director of sales transformation for radio. He joined Nine as part of its acquisition of Macquarie Media in 2019 after spending eight years with the radio company.

In his new role, Smyth will focus on “maximising the outcome for radio” and will report to Nine’s director of sales, TV, and radio Richard Hunwick.

Smyth’s remit includes working with the executive team to develop and implement strategy. He will work with Hunwick to lead a newly formed internal team bringing together Powered, commerce, trade marketing, research and digital.

“In his role he [Smyth] will be a leader, an advisor, a collaborator, a business driver, a mentor, a sounding board and an ambassador for our Radio offering,” Hunwick said in a note to staff.

“From a commercial perspective, this will not affect our Sales structure in any way – Radio Sales teams will continue to sit within their GBD groups, and 9+ continue to report into Tim [Rose] as they currently do…”

Part of Smyth’s role also involves identifying and developing key verticals where Nine is “under indexed''.
