News Media Awards 2019: Herald Sun is the Daily News Brand of the Year

Melbourne's the Herald Sun has been named Daily News Brand of the Year in the NewsMediaWorks' 2019 News Media Awards.

The judges said: “Every finalist in this category was at the top of their game but the Herald Sun had the edge with its newsbreaking exclusives, its ability to service readers across all platforms and its attention to digital growth.”

The newspaper won a string of categories in the News Media Awards including News Story of the Year for the Lawyer X coverage, about a defence lawyer who passed secrets to police, which prompted a royal commission. 

And the Herald Sun 's Jason Edwards won Best News Photography for an image captured at the Reclaim Princes Park vigil for murder victim Eurydice Dixon.

AFR Weekend was awarded Weekend News Brand of the Year, The Hobart Mercury Regional News Brand of the Year and the The City (Adelaide) the Community News Brand of the Year. 

NewsMediaWorks CEO, Peter Miller, said: “I offer my sincere congratulations to all the winners in this year’s News Media Awards. Once again the calibre of entries and the significant commitment to innovation and editorial excellence demonstrated by our publishers has impressed the judging panel and made selecting winners a challenging process."
